Interior and Exterior Photography

As a young (and by young I mean fairly new in the business) photographer, I like to try out everything.  First started with maternity, children, family - all the safe stuff, nudity (a bit more challanging), wedding celebration (exciting! love all the moments!), some product shots, even pets!  With all of these photoshoots you can "manipulate" the subject to get a better frame.  You know, lower the subjects hand, move the plate, run after the children (or sitting still and panning with the zoom lens) ect.

As I have worked at a beautiful guesthouse in Hermanus, Auberge Burgundy, it was just natural that I would wanted to take  photographs of the establishment.  It is easy to take photos of people sitting in the garden, the garden, the tea caddy and so on.  The really difficult thing is a room and the building.  You must stand on the right angle in order that the picture does not look distorted.  The furniture in the room must be moved so that it looks good on the photo,  and then a final touch like a book or a flower to take the blandness out of the photo.  Sometimes it is a simple as flipping a magazine open, putting fresh flowers in the room, or changing the painting in the room.

You have to be prepared, know what your client want, have the final product in mind and not be rushed.
However, you know what they say.....practice makes perfect.  And when people do crit your photos, take it form who it comes.  Does this person know what he/she is talking about?  Listen to what people have to say, look again at your photos and see where you can improve.  It is not always easy, but it will help.

You just got to LOVE facial expressions with children!  Unrehearsed and raw!
I recently did a birthday party, and the look on the Boy's face when the sparkler went on...priceless!  And the excitement just before you blow out the candles...takes me years back!

Tango the night away

These photographs were taken at a gala event held at Arabella Western Cape Hotel and Spa recently.  They were part of the entertainment for the evening.

I first starte shooting with flash, however the flash took the whole "feeling" away.  I wanted to capture more movement using motion blur.  The flash was switched off, used manual and set a lower shutter speed.  As I was using a telephoto lens, it was possible that the photos might be out of focus.  Took the chance and I am satisfied with the end product.

Lesson I learned during the evening.....rules are meant to be broken some times.

Breakfast at Oskars

Welcome to my blog!

This week theme is "Breakfast".  With all the possibilities in Hermanus, it is some times difficult to dedice where to go just for a coffee.  Emilia (my photography buddy and talented cook of The Cook Club) and I decided on Oskars Delikatessen, situated in Harbour Road, Hermanus.

Our cuppacinos were  served in beautiful Delft painted cups and saucers - I love any thing Dutch!  The food is beautifully presented and tasty too!  This is a definate must on your coffee shopping list!

First day on the job!

I am very excited to have started my very first blog.
My name is Salomé Nortier and a live in beautiful Hermanus.  I have just started a career in photography. 

With this blog I will share my knowledge as a photographer, will post photographs for you to comment on (should you like), and will share my trials and tribulations as an self employer.
